RHONY Alum Leah McSweeney Sues Andy Cohen & Bravo

RHONY alum Leah McSweeney sues Andy Cohen and Bravo

Leah McSweeney sues Andy Cohen and Bravo for allegedly preying on her issue with alcohol while filming RHONY and RHUGT.

On Tuesday, Real Housewives of New York alum Leah McSweeney filed a lawsuit against Andy Cohen, Bravo, and Shed Media, in the Southern District of New York, claiming that they intentionally preyed on her alcohol addiction so they could hit a rating jackpot.

Per the lawsuit, the network and production company were aware of Leah McSweeny‘s addiction to alcohol and her mental health issues when she joined the season 12 cast of RHONY in 2019.

The Married to the Mob designer starred in two seasons of RHONY from 2020 until 2021. She went on to star in one season of Bravo’s Real Housewives spinoff show, Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip.

According to the lawsuit, instead of the network and production helping Leah remain sober, they “not only supplied Ms. McSweeney with unlimited, free-of-charge alcoholic beverages throughout Ms. McSweeney’s employment as a cast member on ‘RHONY’ Season 12 but also encouraged her to consume those alcoholic beverages.”

The suit adds, “This environment caused Ms. McSweeney to relapse into alcohol addiction shortly  after joining RHONY season 12.”

RHONY alum Leah McSweeney plans to sue Bravo

As a result, the 41-year-old “grew mentally and physically ill, which  manifested into extreme depressive symptoms.”

When Leah McSweeney attempted to refrain from drinking while filming, Bravo, Andy Cohen, and production would “put Ms. McSweeney in situations where she felt pressured to relapse into alcohol use disorder.”

She “feared that her sobriety would cause a trickledown effect, where if she continued not to drink… Cohen, [the producers] and the audience would think she was boring [and] Cohen would no longer want her on the show.”

However, when she “refused to relapse into addiction,” producers “attempted to exacerbate Ms. McSweeney’s mental health disabilities in hopes that Ms. McSweeney’s worsened mental health would cause her to display the erratic  behavior they wanted.”

Because of all this, the lawsuit claims that Bravo, Shed Media, and Andy Cohen “discriminated against, tormented,  demoralized, demeaned, harassed and retaliated against Ms. McSweeney because she is a woman with disabilities, such as alcohol use disorder and various mental health disorders, all in the name of selling drama. But being in the business of reality television does not relieve [them] of their obligation to follow employment laws that prohibit the exact type of discrimination, hostile work environment, and retaliation that Defendants subjected Ms. McSweeney to. Now, Ms. McSweeney  seeks justice.”

Leah McSweeney gets fiery on Bravo’s Real Housewives

The RHONY alum opened up on social media about her decision to seek legal action against Bravo and Andy Cohen.

On Instagram, Leah wrote:

This is not a story I ever thought I would be telling; in fact, I was petrified to speak on it and was warned not to. Today my attorneys filed a lawsuit in the United States District Court of The Southern District of New York against my former employers. Your favorite Bravo shows are run by people who create a dangerous work environment, encourage substance abuse to artificially create drama, and cynically prey on the vulnerabilities of their employees. Some of the stories and incidents that are detailed in the lawsuit have been shown in edited form on TV or reported in media, but many have not. And there will be much more that comes out once the people involved are questioned under oath. Today I am taking back my reality.

There’s something wonderful about the concept of Reality TV – that millions of people you’ve never met can laugh with you, cry with you, empathize with you, and root for you.

But the reckless and diabolical way in which the people at the top drool over the mishaps and misfortunes of the women including myself are disturbing. It’s a workplace culture where toxicity, alcoholism and pain are not only expected but encouraged and facilitated.

That is something I most definitely did not sign up for nor would I ever endorse.

There is nothing more important than my sobriety; without it, I risk losing everything. I have been very transparent about my addiction and recovery; however, there are personal things in this lawsuit that I never wanted to disclose for fear of being judged and shamed, but I am at a point now in my life where I feel strong enough to withstand whatever may come my way.

I have love and respect for many of the Bravo talent and getting to know them was a positive experience in all of this. I may be a pariah to them after this, but I do hope my lawsuit helps reality TV to align with its true purpose: to authentically depict the complexities of life while offering genuine support to those who share their stories.

I’ve been trying to address this internally for years now but have been dismissed, stone-walled, and gaslit (but actually) at every turn since. Bravo can try to manipulate my reality and others’ all they want, but the cold hard facts of this case are as real as it gets.

Thank you to my close friends and family and of course @adelmanmatz who have supported me in every difficult but necessary step of this journey. I will see you in court.

It’s unclear when the Real Housewives of New York will return for season 15 or when filming will begin. RHONY Legacy is currently airing on Peacock.

I was just reminded on YT that Leah is a "suer" and is enjoying what little life she has in NYC because she $ued the police (and won) a sizeable settlement, which she has apparently already "blown" through (pun intended). Still, I hope she wins. I was also reminded that Bethenny was the one who recommended her to Andy in the first place, and word on the dirty crime filled streets of NYC is she is funding her legal bills.

"So they could hit a rating jackpot". Um yeah, that didn't happen, and if it did, I guarantee this lawsuit wouldn't be happening. But I digress, frivolous money grab(s) or not, I hope Leah wins big. Next I'd love to see Brandi proceed with an official lawsuit based on sexual harassment (which appears to be a slam dunk), then Kelly Leventhal for wrongful termination based on political discrimination, Ramona Singer and Jenni Nguyen should sue for the same thing (with defamation and slander thrown in). I think ALL of these ladies have extremely strong cases. What we all wouldn't give to see Asswipe Cohen get his due.

Oh I hope Miss Andy is squirming in his thong. Ramona, Jenni and Kelly, should indeed sue for wrongful termination. He is such a loser, I hope he loses everything that comes his way.

When will these producers be named? Hard not to believe they preyed upon a housewife.

I got Miss Andys 1st book at a garage sale and in it he writes that when he goes on book tours his fans bring him edibles, weed and coke and he mails it all back to his home so he doesn't get caught with it on an airplane. He is a low class pig! How can he do these drugs having 2 little ones at home?

He shares a lot on his radio show, and at times loves to act like the doting "single father", but then in the same breath contradicts himself talking about his latest hookups and crushes, which suggests that for the most part, those kids are being raised by his nannies, assistants, and his family (which is probably a good thing anyway).

Exactly. I have been saying the same a few times this afternoon. He was 50 or close to it when he had the first one. They don't have a mom to take over if he screws up or dies because his illegally obtained drugs are laced with fentanyl. Hopefully their nannies are decent people with integrity. (I had no idea he admitted it in a book!) What a trashy father just like most of the trashy women on HWs with kids still at home, IMO. By the way, I read the Billy Wagner trial is May 6. Can't remember if I told you that plus not sure if it will be changed. They did rule in January that it will stay in Pike County. (Yeah, I'm here. :) Shhh ) Also, I wanted to ask you what is the name of the site where the woman who covered the other trial did articles? It seems like, "Law and something" or ??? I sure hope he doesn't get off because it isn't a speedy trial like with the Manzo guy!!! Hope you are doing well!

Leah, has a case here or it wouldn't be filed. . .BRAVO/Andy loses with one word "cocaine". Delusional Cohen thinks that accusation will disappear or be spun or be settled, but it will grow and live in the social media and with his "history".
675309 February 28, 2024 - 3:41 pm
As a guy with two little kids I think it is reprehensible that because it is such a rumor (or fact) with him, it is his history, like you said. If not for him choosing to have two little kids (starting at age 50 and single), who cares. (I don't think she has a case, though, but bravo needs to feel the heat.)

The lawsuits and the allegations and the confirmation grow against Cohen and a tipping point will happen at NBC/BRAVO as it did before.

Not a Leah fan but Andy Cohen and Bravo have it coming. Hope the truth comes out and the industry cleans itself up. On some level it sounds like what happens in the porno industry. Not as bad but there are similarities.

Bravo exploits the mentally disturbed ones and sometimes it comes back to bite them! Although I don't think she has a case, I do think it is funny since she started a business by winning a lawsuit against a cop (or police dept) because she was doing something illegal and got hurt fighting the arrest as I recall. Now she is looking to start some other business perhaps! They should have fired her after the first season because of her obvious mental issues but they didn't. She was a reckless, irresponsible fool to continue, IMO. She was annoying and boring on the UGT she was on, too. She is so much like Brandi Glanville in that not only does she never admit she's wrong but she always justifies her reckless or nasty behavior. If cornered, she whines and blames. Brandi is doing it now, too by blaming bravo for her aggressive behavior toward Caroline. Maybe they'll quit hiring the ones with sociopathic tendencies.

This one sounds like a HUGE stretch in some points, but I have NO DOUBT whatsoever, NONE, that they pressured and/or enticed her to drink. It’s just too on brand not to be true imo. Whether or not she’s going to be able to PROVE that along with her myriad of other claims is a whole different ball of wax ESPECIALLY since she kept coming back for more. ? And while I suspect MASTER gaslighting could VERY well have been at play there, it seems very much an uphill battle at the least. Still, if there’s ANY truth to ANY of her claims, I hope Bravo and AC eat pavement after being served the enormous b*tch slap they wholeheartedly deserve.

I'd like to see bravo lose since they kept hiring her. They need to stop intentionally hiring the overly aggressive and mentally ill and in doing so, make it reasonably safe for others. However, Leah doesn't deserve a penny. She just refuses to be responsible for her choices and actions. IMO.
Champagne Hangover February 28, 2024 - 2:16 pm
Yes, I don’t disagree BUT Bravo has NO business providing or paying for alcohol on the clock, period. No exceptions. Furthermore, they also have no business pressuring, incentivizing or encouraging ANY alcohol use whatsoever. That said, if these employees CHOOSE to imbibe and Bravo CHOOSES not to have a rule against it, then BOTH assume risks when something goes awry. And SPOILER ALERT: something will go awry. Whether it’s actionable or not, something WILL go awry. And it’s all fun and games until someone gets their @ss sued. Oh well.

If it wasn't a business that exploits I'd agree. But it is trashy reality TV so I wouldn't expect them to go from not only not hiring known physically aggressive people (Teresa, Danielle, Brandi, etc etc), people charged with crimes (Teresa and Erika), mentally ill people (Leah and I'd include Luis Ruelas) and people convicted of crimes (Teresa)to not paying for alcohol when there are meals and events. I think the problem is what I mentioned earlier-the people they hire to exploit their horrible behavior. The alcohol being available wouldn't be a problem, if it is, without the hiring of the kind of people that make the workplace unsafe for others. (Let the responsible drinkers have free drinks! Ha) I 100% agree with you, though that there should never be pressuring or encouraging of drinking. If so, it needs to be proven and they need to be nailed for it. The problem is, they hire people they shouldn't but there are enough people who watch the shows so they keep it up. The viewers enable it. I'd be fine with doing away with all HW shows personally. They are all crap although I've only watched 4. We'll work together and I'll fix their hiring practices and you'll set the boundaries on alcohol!!!
Champagne Hangover February 28, 2024 - 5:50 pm
Providing and paying for alcohol opens a can of worms re: liability issues. Bravo has already made statements concerning alcohol in the concessions made BEFORE both Brandi and Lea filed their lawsuits. Too little, too late? Get your popcorn ready cuz we’re about to find out…? ???
Snarky Enigma February 28, 2024 - 4:02 pm
Yup, the "victimhood' is off the chain, but typical with people like her if you know what I mean (and I know you do:-). I admit it, I'm biased and all for seeing the crooked justice system and the loons eating their own.
Champagne Hangover February 28, 2024 - 5:55 pm
It’s quite entertaining, isn’t it? I must say, it’s especially enjoyable to see Andy be the one to squirm a little bit, no? It scratches that sadistic itch in just the right way. ?

The problem is, I can guarantee you that not one of these women would stand true to their moral convictions, and refuse a contract to rejoin their shows. https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/23ab0fd63d8295357b0fe833b48db50ba03eaae23a0c096a4ac26f6320d6a239.jpg
