Mary Cosby is setting the record straight.
The first lady of the Faith Temple Pentecostal Church got grilled at the Real Housewives of Salt Lake City reunion about some contractions she made during season one.
Mary denied that she ever said she was scared of black men hanging out in front of 7-11.
“I said I have a fear [of] when guys are standing out in front of a convenience store,” she explained. Reunion host Andy Cohen cut her off, asking, “Black guys?” to which she replied, “I’m black. My son is black.”
She then accused co-star Jen Shah of twisting her words. Andy then asked, “You have a fear of men standing in front of convenience stores?” Mary replied with a simple nod.
Andy brought up the fact that Mary said it on camera; however, Mary continued to deny the accusation.
Co-star Meredith Marks chimed in, saying that she believes Mary meant to say she is scared of “sketchy people” and not black men.
“My taste of black guys — that’s not my taste,” Mary noted, which prompted Andy to ask, “Your taste is not for black guys?”
“No,” she replied, explaining that she is attracted to lighter-skinned men. Andy pointed out that her husband, Robert Sr., is black. Mary replied that Robert is white before clarifying that he is a “lighter” skin black man and not biracial.
She also denied that she is racist.
“I need to improve on the way I convey things … The way I say things can come across [as] offensive. I think all colors of black are beautiful, and I’m proud of it, and I’m proud of my culture.”
Speaking of her husband Robert Sr., Mary now says she wasn’t forced to marry her step-grandfather.
Throughout season one of RHOSLC, Mary claimed that her late grandmother told her she needed to marry her step-grandfather.
“I did marry him. I didn’t want to … That’s weird to me. But [my grandmother] really did want me to, so I obeyed her. I trusted every word,” Mary explained in one episode.
However, at the reunion, she was singing another tune.
She admitted there was no proof that it was her grandmother’s dying wish to marry her step-grandfather.
“No, there’s no receipts,” she revealed at the reunion when asked.
“Well, my grandmother told me for herself that she wanted me to take her place,” she explained before noting that she and Robert Sr. prayed about getting married for two years before actually tying the knot.
“So basically, Robert Sr. was 20 years younger than my grandmother,” she added. “My grandmother felt like she robbed his youth, and so she said, ‘If something ever happens, I want you to marry one of my girls because I know they’ll be loyal to you and treat you good like you treated me.’”
She then dropped some major bombs about her marriage.
Mary said she “thinks” she loves her husband before admitting that their marriage is still an arrangement.
She also revealed that she and Robert Sr. don’t sleep in the same bed and haven’t had sex in years but insists their marriage is still “beautiful.”
“You can’t go through a marriage for 22 years and be happy,” she said. “Like every single Chanel, he’s bought it for me. And I haven’t had to buy myself anything. All my designer things, Robert Sr. has gotten them for me … We’re happy, and you can’t say or do anything to take happiness away from me because it’s hard to get. It’s very hard to find. And if you can find that in a man, it doesn’t matter where he came from.”
Real Housewives of Salt Lake City is expected to return to Bravo for season 2 in mid-to-late 2021.
