Braunwyn Windham-Burke is coming out and letting the world know that she is gay.
“I like women. I’m gay. I’m a member of the LGBTQ+ community,” she revealed. “It has taken me 42 years to say that, but I am so proud of where I am right now. I’m so happy where I am. To be able to be comfortable in my own skin after so long is just so nice.”
As for her 20-year marriage to husband Sean Windham-Burke, the RHOC star said, “I love Sean. I love him dearly; he is my person; he is my family. But I’m not attracted to men, and I never have been.”
Braunwyn and Sean are still married and plan to stay that way however their marriage has changed forever. The RHOC couple no longer shares a bedroom, and Braunwyn now has a girlfriend, who has Sean’s seal of approval.
According to Braunwyn, Sean knows her girlfriend and is aware they spend time together at the Windham-Burke family home in Newport Beach.
“Sean and I are still married. I plan on staying married…We’re raising the kids together. He’s my best friend. He knows the girl I’m dating; her name is Kris. I mean, we go to parties together! She came over the other night, hung out with the family, had dinner with us. I mean, it’s only as weird as you make it,” she explained.
Speaking of Sean, he showed unwavering support for his wife amid her announcement that she was gay.
“I love you. I’m proud of you. And I support you. Always” Sean wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, Braunwyn also addressed her makeout scene with Tamra Judge from season 14 of RHOC. While speaking with GLAAD, Braunwyn revealed that she confessed to RHOC producers last season that the kiss wasn’t a drunken accident.
“I had a scene with Tamra that everyone kind of talked about,” she said. “When we were getting ready for the reunion, I was talking to a producer that I trust a lot, his name was James, and he said, ‘How do you feel about this? Was it a drunken mistake, or is this a part of who you are?’ And I said, ‘This is who I am.’”
She added, “When I went to the reunion last year, I kind of started baby-stepping into, ‘This is who I am. I like women.’ I was testing the waters with my friends, my cast, my family.”
Braunwyn further claims that getting sober helped her finally accept her true self.
“This year, I got sober, which I know there is a correlation between the two. I know that when you get sober, and you start doing the work that goes into that, you start realizing a lot of the reasons you drank had to do with who you were on the inside…This sort of became something that I didn’t want to hide anymore, and I didn’t want to keep a secret anymore. I wanna be able to go out to dinner with whoever I want without judgment. You know, as long as my husband was okay and the person I was dating was okay and knows everything. I didn’t wanna have to hide this anymore,” she explained.
