Dorinda Medley is candidly discussing her departure from the Real Housewives of New York for the first time.
On Tuesday, the former RHONY star appeared on Bethenny Frankel’s Just B podcast, where she admitted that she “did not have a good season this year.” She added that she “not going to make excuses for it … but I was doing real. You know, that’s where I was at that time.”
During the season 12 reunion, Dorinda admitted to Andy Cohen that she was “overwhelmed” and probably should have taken a year off from the show.
“I’ll be honest with you, I felt very, very scared going into the season because not only was my life very intense with all the things, you know, the house, my father, broken rib, breaking up with John [Mahdessian],” she explained. “It was like, wow. … I’m not putting any blame, but you know, when you left, I was really in a mode of coming back and being a powerful couple. Then, you know, I came back, and I was sort of a toothpick in an ocean. I didn’t get my voice out correctly.”
“I probably should have taken a year off,” she continued, “I had a rough season, but that’s what we do as Housewives. We have good seasons; we have bad seasons. We come back, and we change it up.”
“And you get in over your skis. You drink, something happens, you say something, and then you’re in your head about what you just said, but the show must go on,” she said. “You’re still filming; there’s still cameras. So that’s what is challenging, and that’s where I do feel you. And, listen, everybody always gets their resurrection season. So the next season, the person is super cautious, they got burned, everything they did wrong the season before … “
Dorinda adds that she is currently “in a good place” and was “looking forward to coming back this year” to redeem herself.
“And listen, I was looking forward to coming back this year. I was looking forward to having that moment. I was ready to go back, I was excited to go back, I was planning to back, and I thought I would have a great year. I wasn’t given that option,” she admitted. “They’re calling it a pause, which I don’t really … for me, I’m an old-fashioned girl. If you’re not waitressing and getting paid, you’re not waitressing.”
“At the end of the day, it was a mutual ‘no,'” she continued. “This is pretty much the first time I’ve spoken as honestly outside of you and I talking that I’ve done.”
She then reveals she learned Bravo wasn’t asking her back for season 13 via phone shortly after talking to a woman who is creating a gingerbread version of her Blue Stone Manor estate in the Berkshires.
“I’m thinking how it’s gonna be great for the show. ‘Oh, my God, this is gonna be my season, and I’m gonna come back because everything is done. I’m in a good place,’” she recalled.
Adding, “No one likes rejection.”
However, Dorinda says she’s now at peace with her departure.
“It’s released me to do other things,” she said. “It’s put me in a really much saner place.”
In August, after 5 seasons on the show, Dorinda announced her exit from RHONY.
“What a journey this has been. I have laughed and cried and tried to Make it Nice…” she wrote on Instagram in August. “But all things must come to an end. This was a great outlet for me to heal when my late husband, Richard, passed away. I have met so many interesting people and learned so much about myself, about life, and about women along the way.”
She continued: “Thank you to Bravo and NBC for the incredible ride and to my castmates for constant stimulation and entertainment. I wish you all health, happiness, and success. Clip!”
RHONY will return to Bravo for season 13 in 2021.
