Andy Cohen is talking about all things Real Housewives of New York – from the season 12 reunion to what’s to come for season 13 and so much more!
The Big Daddy of Bravo told E! that he loved filming the RHONY season 12 reunion in person.
“It was great!” Andy told E! “I mean, it was really odd on one level, but it was also amazing to be doing an in-person…and we were all six feet away, we weren’t allowed to touch. But it was really, it was still really dramatic, and it was just it was exciting.”
“I’ve never been happier to put a suit on,” he added.
Speaking of season 12, Andy also addresses Dorina Medley earning the “villain” label this season. While Dorinda seemed to unfairly go after Tinsley Mortimer’s life this season, Andy tells Entertainment Tonight there’s more to Dorinda’s anger.
“I think she was not in a great place this season,” Andy says of Dorinda, “and you see that and she’s dealing, she’s got a lot of anger that doesn’t necessarily — I think, on the show, it looks like she’s just so mad at Tinsley, but when you take a more global view of what’s going on in her life, I think you’ll see that she’s got more going on that she’s upset about that you’re not hearing about.”
Dorinda dealt with a significant flood at her home in the Berkshires on top of breaking up with her longtime boyfriend John John Mahdessian, plus a whole lot more we haven’t even seen on the show. Andy encourages fans to keep watching to see where things go between Dorinda and the RHONY cast.
While season 12 of RHONY has been wild and crazy, it’s also been somewhat lite on the explosive drama we expect from the NY Housewives. Because of this many fans wonder if the franchise needs a major casting shakeup.
Back in season 5, RHONY got a massive casting overhaul when more than half of the cast exited the franchise and made way for new blood. Dorinda, Sonja Morgan, Ramona Singer, and Luann de Lesseps have the longest tenure on the franchise.
However, Andy says it’s much too early to know if a drastic casting change is needed on the franchise.
“First of all, I think that we’re really celebrating Leah [McSweeney] joining the show, ’cause she’s done an incredible job as a first-season Housewife, just getting in there and she’s really integrated really well,” he notes. “She didn’t really know any of the women before we started, so it’s great. And also, you know, we lost an MVP this season with Bethenny [Frankel] leaving the show. So, listen, it always takes a minute to kind of regroup and find your footing, but they certainly hit the ground running this season, and there’s a lot more to come for them. And they are a group that really does see each other throughout the year. This is not a ‘show friendship.’ They’re really in each other’s lives.”
Yet, Andy is “excited” to add more diversity to the RHONY cast for season 13 and beyond.
“We’re working on next season,” Andy told Us Weekly about plans to diversify the season 13 cast of RHONY. “I’m excited for what we have planned.”
Earlier this month, Luann told Extra TV that there would “definitely” be “some new Housewives” in the mix for season 13 of RHONY.
Meanwhile, an insider told Us Weekly, “Bravo is planning to shake things up with The Real Housewives of New York next year,” while another insider added, “There’s going to be some changes. … A handful of white women doesn’t necessarily represent what New York City is all about.”
The Real Housewives of New York airs on Thursdays at 9 p.m. ET.
