Luann de Lesseps is saying goodbye to her sobriety for 2020.
In a new interview with People, the Real Housewives of New York star reveals that she’s drinking again but insists she’s doing it responsibly.
According to Lu, after months of soul searching and reflection, she’s decided to allow herself to drink – on occasion.
“New Year’s has been a time of reflection,” explained Luann. “I’ve learned a great deal about myself, and I’m in a very good place and finally back in the driver’s seat.”
“I’ve always said my journey is day by day,” she added. “I’m toasting to a happy new year ahead!”
This surprising, or maybe not so surprising news, comes after a two-year roller coaster for the NY Housewife, which started when she arrested in Palm Beach, FL, on Christmas Eve 2017. She was arrested on charges of battery, trespassing, and disorderly intoxication.
Afterward, Luann quit drinking and did a short stint in rehab; however, less than six months later, the RHONY star had relapsed and found herself back in rehab. Yet, this time around, Luann was in and out of rehab in a blink of an eye, choosing her popular Cabaret show over rehab.
As part of Luann’s plea deal, which she agreed to in August 2018, she was not allowed to drink. Instead of jail time, Luann agreed to one-year probation. Under said agreement, Luann was not allowed to drink or consume drugs. She was also required to attend two AA meetings a week, perform 50 hours of community service, and complete a Victim Impact Class organized by Mothers Against Drunk Driving.
Luann seemed to be playing by the rules until April 2019 when she failed her alcohol test and later admitted to “drinking 2 glasses of mimosas after a [cabaret] performance she had in Chicago.”
Around this time, rumors began to swirl that Luann wasn’t taking her sobriety seriously. Many, including Lu’s RHONY co-stars, insisted that she had been drinking the entire time she claimed to be “sober.” The Countess denied this claim.
After her April slip up, Luann agreed to a new probation deal that included weekly call-in counseling sessions and monthly psychiatric sessions. Luann also agreed to keep a breathalyzer with her at all times.
In August 2019, Luann celebrated the end of her probation and thanked fans for their support on Instagram.
“Hi, my friends, I’m happy to say after a difficult year…I’ve made it through!” Luann wrote in a handwritten letter posted on Instagram. “I’m humbled and grateful for this life lesson and ready to put the past behind me and move on with my life.”
“Wish me luck!” she added. “Thank you for your undying support over the year. Love always, Luann.”
