A new book claims that Bethenny Frankel‘s childhood wasn’t as bad as she’s alluded.
The SkinnyGirl mogul has often mentioned her tumultuous and abusive childhood on the Real Housewives of New York but now the biography of her stepfather, horse trainer John Parisella, who married Bethenny’s mom Bernadette “Bonnie” Frankel in 1975, says her claims have been greatly exaggerated.
The biography “From the Streets of Brooklyn to Trainer to the Stars,” reports that both Parisella and Bonnie “take issue” with Bethenny’s claims about her childhood.
In 2010 on Bethenny’s spinoff show “Bethenny Getting Married,” the reality TV star said, “I was raised in a cave by animals” when discussing her abusive upbringing.
However, the biography author Denny Dressman claims that Bethenny lived in “some million-dollar houses,” while Bethenny’s mother says Parisella “paid for the best schools” and “made sure he went to all of her school shows.”
Bonnie does confirm Bethenny’s claims that Parisella beat her but denies he ever attacked her daughter. Bethenny does backup said claims; confirming that neither her mother nor Parisella ever physically abused her. Bonnie also admits that Parisella was a habitual drug user and “sometimes drank too much.”
As for Bethenny, a source close to the RHONY star tells Page Six: “Bethenny weathered a tough childhood.”
Adding, “She, unfortunately, grew up in a household with a lot of physical and mental abuse, alcoholism, drugs and a gun,” and “her stepfather would beat her mother and Bethenny would oftentimes have to call the police.”
“Despite all this, she did go to a great school and she was able to find her way through and become the woman she is today. She wouldn’t be such a survivor had she not experienced this childhood,” the source explains.
“Bethenny does have fond memories of her stepfather,” but “she hasn’t spoken to him in a few years since she gave him money, which he gambled away on college basketball,” the insider continued.
The Real Housewives of New York airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. EST on Bravo.
