Cynthia Bailey is opening up about the hot mic moment on The Real Housewives of Atlanta that led to her friendship fallout with co-star, NeNe Leakes. Cynthia appeared on fellow castmate, Kandi Burruss Tucker’s YouTube series Speak On It. Cynthia denied that she tried to set up NeNe by inviting RHOA alum Kenya Moore to a filmed event for the finale episode. Kenya showed up to Cynthia’s launch event for Seagram’s Escapes Peach Bellini drink. Kenya showed up as a surprise with Kandi. Cynthia said she didn’t know that Kenya was coming but when she was speaking to Mike Hill it seemed like she was covering it up and that she was plotting with Kandi to get Kenya there without NeNe knowing. Cynthia said with her microphone on, “I’m supposed to act like I didn’t know Kenya was coming.”
Cynthia was heard whispering off camera, “I just want to make sure we was on the same page, setting up how Kenya got here.” Kandi was heard reminding her, “I’m mic’d, I’m mic’d , I’m mic’d , I’m mic’d.”
However; Cynthia said it’s all a misunderstanding. She said she invited Kenya but that Kenya had declined the invitation because camereas were there and she wouldn’t get paid for her appearance. Kandi says that she’s the one who ended up convincing Kenya to attend in the end. Kandi said she convinced Kenya because she told her that fans want to see Kenya’s next chapter of life. Kandi explained, “We’ve all been invested in her finding love and her eventually having her baby that she always wanted. It did not work out for her to be on the season. I just felt like we were kind of cheating the fans for them not being able to at least being able to see her pregnant. At the end of the day, I knew that she possibly might be coming but I did not share that with Cynthia. I was the one who got Kenya to come. I was the one who talked her into it. But I did not get a confirmed answer until I pulled up at the party.”
Cynthia said, “If I was going to say something that I knew was going to be recorded, that’s when I would have hung up my phone and texting Kandi. If I knew she was coming I would say, I knew she was coming.” As far as her discussions with Mike that night, Cynthia answered, “That was really tricky for me. I was drinking a lot of Seagram’s Peach Bellinis that night, I really was.”
In retrospect, Cynthia said she doesn’t remember saying any of that to Mike. Cynthia stated, “I don’t remember saying that but I can tell you this: the caption said that I said that, so I’m not really trying to go against production really per say. I don’t remember saying that nor did I have a reason to say that. At the end of the day, I’m not trying to look like a liar because I’m not a liar, there’s nothing to lie about. If I did say that, after I saw how NeNe was treating Kenya, at that point, I’m just trying to keep the peace. I would have said anything at that point. If I said it, it was to keep the peace.”
Kandi said that she wasn’t plotting anything with Cynthia. Kandi said, “This was not a plot or ploy against NeNe. Us wanting Kenya to come by the party during a taped episode had nothing to do with NeNe. I know that she has been putting it out there that we have been plotting against her but this has nothing to do with NeNe. Yes, we are both friends with Kenya. I would like to see her back on the show. But it has nothing to do with NeNe. We want all of them to be there!”
Cynthia added, “I have publicly said many times, Kenya and NeNe are both great for the show. Why would I plot to get NeNe off the show? Can I even get NeNe off the show? I didn’t even know I could get NeNe off the show. I know she’s tried to get me off the show before but I’ve never actually tried to get her off the show. I ain’t tried to take money off of nobody’s plate. ‘Cause that’s not what I do.”
Cynthia has recently said that her friendship with NeNe is over. She appeared on Jenny McCarthy’s SiriusXM radio show and said, “I feel, like, at this point, I’m paying attention now. I see things for exactly how they are. I’m not confused about my relationship or if I even had a real relationship with this woman. I deserve better. At this point, this is not a healthy thing for me. This is not a healthy person for me to be around. This is not good for my spirit. I’m all about positive affirmation. I don’t want to tear women down. I want to lift them up.”
NeNe has been calling out Cynthia and Kandi for conspiring to get Kenya back on the RHOA. NeNe tweeted, “YOU DONT UNDERSTAND HOW THIS BROKE ME! I will NEVER be ok! NEVER! So much has happened that you don’t get to see! Thank God they showed this and gave me a little rope! I’m broken! My sisterhood was real REAL!”
Cynthia also feels that editing is to blame about the hot mic moment. She explained on the radio show, “I read a caption, but I don’t hear those words coming out of my mouth nor would I have a reason for those words to come out of my mouth, but OK. If I did say that, at that point, once both of the ladies were in the room, Jenny, my only concern was keeping the peace and having a successful event.”
Woah! This situation is crazy. I’m looking forward to the RHOA reunion!
