When Dennis Shields passed away suddenly in August 2018, Bethenny Frankel didn’t just lose her good friend and boyfriend – she also lost her fiance.
The Real Housewives of New York star is now revealing that Dennis popped the question in April 2018.
In a preview for next week’s episode, Bethenny confesses to a stunned Dorinda Medley that she and Dennis were engaged at the time of his death.
Bethenny admits that her romance with Dennis wasn’t picture perfect but says his death really threw her for a loop.
“It was not even close to a perfect relationship,” Bethenny says as she struggles to find the right words. “Part of me died inside. It was really bad but I couldn’t get out though either. I loved him so much. And we were family and my daughter was so close to him and I knew him for so many years.”
The SkinnyGirl mogul then dropped a bombshell, which Dorinda was shocked to learn.
“He proposed on April 25th and I said…”Bethenny confessed.
“No, I didn’t know that,” Dorinda replied.
“Yeah we were engaged,” Bethenny explained as she showed Dorinda her engagement ring from Dennis. Adding, “I didn’t tell anyone that.”
Meanwhile, in her confessional, Dorinda tells the camera, “Wow. To tell you the truth I didn’t even know Bethenny and Dennis were even still dating.”
“Ah, that’s sad,” Dorinda tells Bethenny.
Bethenny agrees as she fights back tears as Dorinda hugs her: “It’s very sad. It’s very sick. No, it’s okay.”
She continued, “I kept it to myself because I didn’t want another circus of my life so I didn’t want to start telling people. We had our own private engagement and our own private ‘OMG we’re going to do this.'”
Dorinda then asks: “Did Bryn know?” Bryn is Bethenny’s 8-year-old daughter with her ex-husband Jason Hoppy.
“He bought Bryn a ring too,” Bethenny revealed, which only made Dorinda more emotional. “I say every day, I truly do, what would he want me to do. Like I went to North Carolina yesterday and I was thinking how I would have discussed it with him and the logistics and the money and he would have been like ‘What do we do? What do we do?'”
“But I think all these storms are meaningful because like this is the storm I have to go through,” Bethenny said.
The Real Housewives of New York airs on Wednesdays at 9 p.m. on Bravo.
