Gina Kirschenheiter The Real Housewives of Orange County - RHOC

Gina Kirschenheiter Shares How Her Kids Are Handling The Divorce, Saying They “Basically Haven’t Told Them,” Plus She Had Her First Post Divorce Date!

Gina Kirschenheiter opened up about keeping her family together during this tough time as she’s going through a divorce on the most recent episode of The Real Housewives of Orange County. Gina is figuring out how to tell her children about her split from husband Matt Kirschenheiter. The NY/OC mom has three children with him: Nicholas, 6, Sienna, 4, and Luca, 3. Although this is her debut season on the RHOC, it’s been eventful!

Gina hasn’t broken the news of the divorce to them yet. Gina told The Daily Dish, “So basically, we haven’t told them. But that’s not good, either. We have to tell them. It’s hard. Even though I think we’re doing as good as possible, you don’t want to go to your kids and say, ‘Mommy and Daddy are breaking up,’ so it’s a really hard thing to say. And I think I struggle with that.”

Gina and Matt are still technically living together, but they have made separate bedrooms for Gina and Matt in their Coto de Caza home. According to Gina’s interview with The Daily Dish last month, “When Gina is home, Matt stays in his apartment in Los Angeles, and Gina stays in her casita when Matt is home with the kids.” They’re trying to make this a smooth transition. “What I’m finding is kids are really resilient and they go with the flow. And so as of now, we just basically transitioned things the way we wanted them. Mommy has a room in the house, and Daddy has a bedroom, and that’s how they refer to things. ‘It’s Mommy’s bedroom. It’s Daddy’s bedroom.’ So the kids don’t actually know anything that’s going on.”

Gina admitted that she’s “just trying to buy time” before she has to have that discussion. Gina said, “Luca and Sienna are really little. They don’t really know. With Nicholas, he’s more aware of what’s going on, but he’s happy and healthy and thriving, so I don’t want to mess with that right now. And I’m just kind of trying to buy time to get him as mature mentally as possible and as old as possible before we have that conversation because I don’t want him to internalize anything, not be able to understand it and then think it has something to do with him. So I’m really worried about that part of it.”

Gina and Matt put their home on the market for $975,000 in August and they later decided to take it off the market and try to sell it at a later date. Although he still lives with her, she’s taking baby steps to move on. In fact she had her first date and it was a “nice” date. Gina revealed, “I did go on one date, and it was nice! It was fun, and then…he ended up getting back together with his girlfriend.” Gina laughed, “After that, it kind of was just nice to feel like, OK, should I choose to want to date, I can actually get a date, you know?”

I feel for Gina as she goes through this difficult time. I get why she hasn’t told her kids, she doesn’t want to hurt them. Plus they are really young, they’re just babies. They don’t understand. However; I think they’ll all get through this! It just takes time. Plus I’m not surprised at all that she got a date and I don’t think she should worry. She’s beautiful and has a lot to offer. She’ll figure out how to navigate dating when she’s ready!
