Let's Discuss: The Real Housewives of Orange County - RHOC Vicki Gunvalson

Vicki Gunvalson Claims She Came Up With The Name “Real Housewives”

Vicki Gunvalson has been a staple in our reality TV lives for 12 years, but now the OG of the OC is now spilling the tea on how she got involved in reality TV in the first place.

In a new interview with the Windy City Times, Vicki explains how she got into reality television and revealed that the show she initially signed up for wasn’t anything like the Real Housewives franchise we know and love.

Vicki says that she initially answered an ad for a reality show called Behind the Gates that would follow the lives of privileged kids and their families.

“The creator of the show, Scott Dunlop, had a little article in our local newspaper and my son answered it,” Vicki explains. “It was going to be called Behind the Gates. I had an insurance business out of my home, and they came over with little hand cameras. This was 13 years ago.”

Then months later Vicki found out her family had been chosen for the show, but now the premise of the show had completely changed.

“Six months later, I got the call. I told them I thought the show was about my son coming home from college to a privileged life. They said they were switching it,” Vicki says.

That’s when Vicki claims she told the creator of the show she didn’t like the name Behind the Gates and thought it should be changed.

In fact, Vick says she’s the one who initially came up with calling the show Real Housewives.

“I told them I didn’t like name Behind the Gates because what would happen if I moved? Desperate Housewives was on at the time, so I suggested the Real Housewives,” Vicki claims.

However, Vicki will give the Real Housewives creator some credit saying, “It was a collaboration. Scott and I sat down to talk about it.”

While Vicki initially saw dollar signs and thought she’d have some rights to the name Real Housewives her dreams were quickly dashed.

“When they used the name of Orange County, I knew I was in trouble because I didn’t have the rights to any of the other franchises,” Vicki explains.

I don’t doubt for a second that Vicki would take credit for coming up with the title Real Housewives. I’d love to see what Andy and the show’s creator has to say about Vicki’s claims. Perhaps at the reunion, this topic will come up. I highly doubt Vicki played any role in creating the name Real Housewives.
