“I was officially diagnosed last week,” she said. Explaining, “About two weeks ago, I had flu-like symptoms which included a low grade fever, headache, aches, chills, join pain and awful neck pain. I posted my condition on social media and a friend suggested I get tested for Lyme disease. She shared with me her struggles with Lyme disease and we shared many of the same symptoms.”
Amber is currently undergoing treatment for breast cancer and had her oncologist administer the test right in his office. Amber is one of the rare, lucky ones who caught her condition very quickly so it is still in the early stages. “I am very fortunate as I caught it so early that no treatment is necessary. But we are going to monitor it.”
Amber claims that keeping physically healthy for her is all about “keeping a positive mindset.” She clarified, “If I thought about the joint pain, then the pain increased. When I ignored it, got my butt to the gym, it went away.” Adding, I believe in the power of the mind. You are sick if you want to be sick, you are well if you want to be well. That is just the way I choose to live my life.“
She wrapped, “I feel really blessed that I caught it before it is too late. I know so many people suffering from this disease and it sounds horrific.“
As someone who has multiple chronic illnesses and lives a very active lifestyle, (yes Amber I do more than just “lift cans”—I work 2 jobs and exercise on a regular basis) I can tell you that a positive mindset is a big part of dealing with your “new normal,” but it’s not every part. What I’ve found is that there is a huge community of support out there, however what Amber said is the opposite of support and I know for a fact what she said upset a lot of people. I know many people that have gotten very sick when they are in the best, happiest times of their life; no Amber we didn’t WANT that. I felt I had to say something, so that’s just what I did. See our twitter fight below!
Obviously others weren’t pleased with Amber’s interview either; the end of the fight got cited by Perez Hilton!
I urge Amber to change the way she publicly speaks about her chronic illness, or expect more backlash from those in the same boat as her; choose your words carefully Amber because you offended myself and many others!
