Former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Kim Richards has been very open about her battle with Alcoholism, and while fans many think they know everything about her struggles, they, in fact, have no idea. In a recent interview PEOPLE Kim opens up about how her struggles with alcohol begin, and surprisingly they didn’t being until her mid-20’s.
“I had my first real drink at 24,” Kim reveals. Prior to that Kim claims she only had “sips every now and then,” but says a problem only showed its roots after the painful end of her second marriage to Gregg Davis in 1991.
“I was always disciplined and driven about my body and what I put into it but the pressure with the divorce and the custody battle, it got to me.”
According to Kim, she began to drink a glass of wine at night which quickly developed into something more. “I started noticing I was drinking a lot. That’s when my issue started.”
Kim, who has struggled with alcoholism for the last two decades, has been to rehab multiple times in 2011 and more recently in 2015.
Kim, who was infamously out as an alcoholic by her sister Kyle Richards during season one of RHOBH, saying joining Real Housewives was “disorienting” and truly challenged her sobriety.“The drama started, and there was fighting and traveling, and I got overwhelmed,” Kim says.
With five years of sobriety behind her, Kim says she’s “in a very good place.” Going on say, “I’m sorry to the people I’ve let down. But my concern is to myself and to my children, first and foremost. I don’t beat myself up because it makes it worse. I have to own it and accept it and move on.”
It’s nice to see Kim open up about the roots of her addiction. I hope Kim can remain sober for her family but more importantly for herself. Sending lots of good vibes Kim’s way.
Are you surprised Kim didn’t start drinking until age 24? Do you think the pressure from RHOBH helped or hindered Kim’s battle with addiction?
