It’s been a rough week for the Edmonds family, as Jim Edmonds’ ex-wife LeAnn lost her battle with cancer. In honor of LeAnn, Meghan King Edmonds recently dyed her hair pink. In a new interview with PEOPLE, Meghan opens up about her tribute to LeAnn, how the family is coping with loss, and about being a step-mother to LeAnn and Jim’s daughter Haley.
Meghan says her pink hair is a tribute to LeAnn and realizing how short life is. “Life is short. My stepdaughter’s mom just recently died less than a week ago. And I was just thinking, you know what, I want to do something fun – and life is short, so why not? I did it.”
As for how the Edmonds family is dealing with the loss of LeAnn, Meghan says there are many “ups and downs.”
“Everybody is kind of grieving in their own way and at their own time and their own schedule. You know, everybody is smiling when we can, but there’s a lot of sadness.”
With LeAnn gone Meghan admits that she is struggling as a step-parent and figuring out her role in Haley’s life.“It’s extremely difficult because I am trying to find out whether or not I’m the disciplinarian, or am I the friend, or am I the stepmom, or where do I stand?”
“It was so great when I had LeAnn as my teammate … because we could bounce things off of each other. And literally the other day I had an idea, and I reached down to grab my phone and text LeAnn, and you know, I can’t do that anymore,” she adds. “I’m really trying to navigate what to do – I really don’t know what to do.”
For the time being Meghan says she just wants to be there for Haley and help her however she can.”I’ll be there for her when she needs me. When I’m gone, she knows that I’m out of sight – but she can always come back and find me.”
