The Gorga’s Owe $2.25M In Mortgage On Their $500k Home!
More money trouble for the Gorga’s. It’s like the more they deny they aren’t having money trouble, the more documents that come out! According to public property records from the Ocean County Court Doc, the Gorga’s took out $2,250,000 mortgage on November 16, 2007 with Sterling Bank, plus interest!
From Radar:
“This mortgage is given as additional collateral for a construction mortgage loan,” the paperwork states.
Melissa and Joe originally purchased the home for only $450,000 in 2005 on which they took out an initial mortgage of $360,000 and a secondary mortgage of $45,000.

You can buy a house, fix it all up and sell it, not a a big profit, but for less than market value after it sits on the market for a year and nobody can get a mortgage, even those with good credit. That is the reality of the situation. The lucky people are breaking even, the unlucky ones have watched their home’s value go down. So, I do not believe a word that is coming out of their mouths. Someone mentioned that these builders buy and build these big homes and try to sell them but when they can’t the file bankruptcy and move onto the next home to build. It does take 7 to 10 years for a bankruptcy to come off your credit if that is true. However he is an idiot if this what these people do because now I don’t see anyone buying or doing any business with these people since they are now in the public view. Fab Fred – you know the guy Meho and Angel from God hired for their Christmas Party – He said they don’t pay their bills. He filed legal paperwork suing them for the unpaid $50,000.00. According to his legal filing against Joe & Melissa Gorga, Joe paid him a whopping $500.00 and then tried to pay off the rest of the bill in free construction work. That is who said they don’t pay their bills. Look it up its public record.

This is bad, but this doesn’t sound right. Banks don’t willy-nilly give out millions of dollars against a property that was recently purchased for less than half a million. My guess is that this house is somehow additional collateral against the loan on their main house which probably does have a 2.25MM loan against it. Otherwise, the Gorgas would just walk away from the shore house.
Yes, I don’t know how these mortgages work, but shouldn’t there be collateral for the total amount? Or is this mortgage on the home they built? It seems like it and the other properties they own (or borrowed to buy) might have been worth nearly that much at the height of the housing boom.

JD is correct. They are meant to be short term loans that are to be paid back as soon as the house is sold. Terms are usually a year or two, and then the balloon payment is due.

The shore house and a house Joe bought in Paterson were on the loan modification docs. So, they don’t have a construction loan, a balloon payment due, and going by public record, they have a 30 yr mtg on the Montville dream house.
I haven’t read the Radar story but it doesn’t seem right? The 450K shore house (it’s not worth that much now) was used as collateral to secure the loan modification on the Montville McMansion.

The proof is that she sat on signing a contract for one of her book deals for a month right around the time she filed for bankruptcy, which would have resulted in a $250,000.00 pay off. She didn’t want them to know she had that money. When that came to light, they decided to stop filing for bankruptcy and pay their creditors.

BK requires actual signing. There is no constructive contract with no signing to be brought into the bankrupt estate. It is a very weak claim by the Ch. 7 trustee. Case law and the code with regs does not support his position. The reason for that is the contract is not finalized. There could be subsequent negotiations. They regs speak to that and combines case law post 2005 redrafting of the BK law supports Teresa’s position.

Because I know for a fact that the mortgage on the 500,000 dollar home wasn’t paid for and it’s real hard to use something for collateral when there is a note already on it. Since this is Paterson, he may have gotten the money and kicked some money back for the person helping him get the loan by not looking to closely (remember this is during the realestate bubble where you didn’t have to put down an occupation to get a house loan).
Yeah and at that time his occupation was I think “Landscaper”. So someone with no business sense trying to be a multi-million dollar developer is just plain ridiculous. He just should have stayed with landscaping and pennyannie house flipper.

Sounds like this may have been the wrap around mortgage that was mentioned in another article. Where their mac-mansion, shore house and building were under one loan OR they used a ‘construction loan’ built their mac-mansion and couldn’t tell the bank that this was their primary residence as it was mentioned before. All sounds fishy. One thing for sure, these people are NOT millionaires in equity or liquid.

Look up Chris Laurita Bankruptcy on google – it will bring up the $8 Million Bankruptcy for Signature Apparel and how they fleeced the company to continue living their lifestyle. Jax is listed as a director or something like that and money was given to her illegally. At least that is being “alleged”.
Very few people would be able to make the monthly payments on this type of mortgage. This exceeds the kind of income a houseflipper and a real housewife bring in. They must have been pretty confident her music career was going to take off.

There was a little thing known as the housing collapse in 2008 and home values drastically dropped. Also, it is common for builders to use their homes as collateral to acquire funds for various construction projects. Roxi, there is enough ammo against the entire cast of NJ without stupid stories such as this that uninformed people such as yourself see as “smoking gun” of some sort.

I think this show would do much better without Teresa, Joe and Melissa. I am starting to see what Jacqueline is saying. See, all those headlines, the negative headlines of going poor, the cheating, the public auction, was put out there by Teresa and it makes sense WHY Teresa would do it. Remember when the bankruptcy stories came out (thanks to Danielle)regarding Teresa, everyone, all the viewers turned on Teresa. We did so because only one year prior, Teresa was on television bragging how she only pays cash for everything and she only likes to own New Homes because used homes are disgusting. When the bankruptcy story came out, we all were pissed and happy because of her cocky attitude. So how do you change the minds of your viewers? You put sad stories out to the media. All these negative stories are saying that Teresa is down in the dumps paying everything back but that’s not really true. Also, she’s worried she’s losing everything but she’s building a large addition to her home. It’s all making sense. She’s playing on your sympathy. All those negative stories, planted by Teresa, was all for your sympathy. She put those negative stories out there of herself so you will think she suffered enough and has changed her selfish attitude. Teresa is a selfish person and she is getting away with a bankruptcy that we will all pay for when the credit companies and banks raise the percentage rates. She claimed that she is paying toward her bankruptcy but It’s a lie because in this last episode, her case hasn’t even gone to court yet and it’s taking a long time to get a hearing. How can she pay toward her debt when she hasn’t even seen a Judge? Her home is huge. That’s a lot of money she is using to build a new addition to her home. She’s not building a shed in her yard, she’s building a extravagant carport. It will be at least one million dollars to build the port.
All those negative stories were planted to get your sympathy and have you believe that she is not the selfish woman you saw in season one.
Think about this, the negative ad on Teresa read that she is afraid of going broke. Season 4 is the additional episodes from season 3. If she was worried about going poor, why would she be building an extravagant carport and an in-law suite? She was making the new renovations/additions to her home at the same time her posessions were about to be auctioned. That makes no sense.
Perhaps Teresa and Joe Giudice’ know the right people to make problems go away?
Just because jacqueline says it doesn’t make it true. Jac and melissa just got caught in another lie recently….. jac twittered while teresa was on wwhl that teresa said the gold digger comment the night before filming because Saint Jacqueline supposedly told teresa to make up with him. But at the same time melissa tweeted that teresa said the comment to joe a week before filming. Another thing is joe guidice is doing the majority of the work on the garage and car port so it will be much cheaper and since he did construction for years he knows what he is doing and probably knows how to build for next to nothing. Also, how desperately jealous is jacqueline that she would stoop so low as to claim teresa is putting those stories in the paper about herself. I think that jacqueline enjoyed when teresa was getting torn down in the media but once people saw teresa working to pay back her debts and her family and teresa was having successes with her books and becoming the star of the show, suddenly the green-eyed monster came out in jac and she came out with this lame excuse about teresa putting out bad stories of herself. Jac even went as far as to accuse teresa of conspiring with danielle to sell stories to papers about jac’s stripper days on vegas. When it came out that it was mardigras and danielle jac wouldn’t take any accountability for her being wrong or apologize for being wrong and publically calling teresa previosly out on it. Funny how jac and the manzo’s can hang out with tom murro, big gossip writer who is always coming out with stories trashing teresa and her family, sometimes dina saying it had secret insider information that can only come from jacqueline which explains why the info is usually wrong. So, let’s see, those are two lies jac has so far been caught in, not mentioning all the stories she puts out there to turn people against teresa, yet all jac does is throw around the word liar regarding teresa but has no facts to ever back it up.
Mari, you raise many solid, valid points. I re-watched the scene it after looking at it twice, I couldn’t help but wonder why Jacqueline kept pressing Teresa for answers. After watching it again, it did seem Jacqueline was trying to get info from Teresa and then it dawned on me that Jacqueline was doing so on television. Why not in private? I do think Teresa was ambushed by Caroline because it clearly appeared too suspicious that Caroline would pop on scene like that. I agree when Teresa said that she cannot discuss certain legal matters on camera or in private so why would Jacqueline try so hard to get Teresa to “confess” on camera? I openned up my mouth too soon. Next time I will watch it twice before I leave any further opinions of mine to make certain my mind is clear. Also, I forgot that Joe Giudice’ was/is an experienced home builder/developer. It does make perfect sense to expand your home when you have a husband like that around the house. lol. I honestly don’t know how I missed all this watching the first time. I got a completely different view the second time. I gave the second view my full attention.
Mari, also forgot to mention, I had no clue Jacqueline and Caroline were friends with a gossip monger/monster. That may also explain why Jacqueline was upset that Teresa doesn’t tell her anything. She reminded me of Jill Zarin. Feed me a story to feed to the tabloids. I am really amazed how Jacqueline and Caroline turned on Teresa. All I can say is, I hope season 5 will leave season 4 in the past and everyone has stopped speaking like teenagers. With the exception of Teresa, all these people are very immature. I have never had problems like this among my family and friends. Never. They are very immature and unstable. Not the kind of people I would invite to an elegant establishment out of fear of embarrassment. Very Immature and backstabbing. Children growing old.
A million dollar car port? Really? Her house may be large and all but I doubt a car port for Mohammed (Lisa’s friend on RHOBH) would cost a million. Teresa brings ratings actually aside from this blog many viewers hate her. And the bankruptcy had little to do with it. It gave the haters more of a reason but didn’t turn her fans against her.
Teresa’s been the breakout star of this show pretty much since day one. She didn’t need to win back the viewers since she never really lost them, despite Bravo trying. Reality TV fans, and people in general, aren’t exactly overflowing with compassion, either. There’s a reason why everybody knows what schadenfreude is. We love to revel in the misfortune of others and kick people when they’re down. If you think planting stories that make Teresa out to be a criminal and lowlife is a good strategy to get sympathy, remind me not to hire you to do PR.
Capile, you have me all wrong. I never want to see people fall. Never. I’m not wealthy, and I have seen wealthy neighborhoods compared to poor neighborhoods. I’m sorry to say this, but if it wasn’t for wealthy people, this world would be very ugly, dirty, and full of horrible things. If not for wealth, we wouldn’t have the privilege of viewing beautiful things. Also, I worked for a utility company and believe it or not, the wealthy citizens/customers were very courteous and kind. Poor people are mean. Not All Poor, but the majority of them were very hot tempered. The nice poor people were always elderly. My Heart Really Goes Out To The Elderly Who Are Finacially Unstable. God Bless Them All. They are so very sweet and offered me fruit and drinks and they barely had enough for themselves. I graciously turned down the fruits and drinks but did so very delicate. As for the suburban/middle class citizens/customers, they live good paycheck to paycheck, but they are the worse to deal with. Very Ignorant, Very Arrogant and Very Paranoid. They behave like they are wealthy and frankly, what are they? Plumbers, Firemen, Cops and Nurses. Sorry, but true! I also earn the same income but do not live in the “Community Association Suburbs.” I live on 3 acres of gorgeous land. If I want a swimming pool, I simply get one and don’t have to get permission from some neighborhood President of the community association who pockets a lot of those community dues.
If jac doesn’t like all those negative headlines then why doesn’t she get her butt off the show? Also as far as negative headlines no one wants anything negative written about them for sympathy, are you kidding me? For awhile they were printing good stuff about teresa before the bankruptcy. She was still making covers and gaining popularity. Negativity happens to sell but in teresas case her face is what is selling the magazines. They even admit it! When she makes the cover they fly off the shelves. People want to know more about her and her family. Put jac on the cover of one and I bet home and garden sells out before hers does.
What kills me is how they all randomly pop up with all the magazines, same episodes, different places lol!
As Americans, we have all seen what happens to a country when people keep spending large sums of money they can’t afford to pay back. Teresa and her husband are part of the reason why our economy crashed. They borrow large sums of money, they use all their credit and then file bankruptcy. Now they are building additions to their home and are they going to pay that back? Joe and Melissa have borrowed large sums of money and they to are building additions to a shore home and are they going to pay that back? These people are like many others who continue to take, take, and take large sums of money, but when it’s time to pay it back, they get out of it and it all trickles down to us.
Say what you will about Caroline, but you don’t see her on television spending large sums of money and no job to show for it. She and her husband have their own business and we see they are doing very well. We see all these other families with no job, yet they are spending millions on home renovations. Their husbands are on this show as much as the women. Do they have legitimate jobs? I see Richard standing at a gas station and Kathy clearly said that he collects money on a monthly basis. Gee, that was a real giveaway that he’s a rico law waiting to fall upon his head in cloud. Joe Giudice’ stands in a pizza parlor talking about taking over a gas station. Another Rico Card Anyone? Jacqueline’s husband is the President of a garment industry. Aren’t all connected mobsters into gas stations, pizza parlors and of course, garment industries? With the exception of Caroline’s husband, not one of these husband’s speak well. Not one of them are intelligent. Yet they all earn several million in their “business adventures” and you never see them working. I wonder how they have all this free time to play profanity poker, and appear on Bravo’s Real Housewives shows to?

Caroline doesn’t work. Last season she was suffering from “Empty nest syndrome” because she was home, all kids gone and complaint that her husband wouldn’t give her any time. Even went on some boring date to play golf.
Jac- doesn’t work. Yet she was listed as “president” of the company. Maybe to justify a ghost paycheck?
Kathy doesn’t work.
Melissa obviously doesn’t work and I don’t know exactly when is it that her husband works since his company is also being sued by 21 different people. OH maybe the Mexican’s he picks up in Newark that he pays $400 a week for a $300,000 renovation contract are the ones really working. Oh ok…

Rosalie, you have good points. However, nothing is black and white, there are always some shades of gray. Teresa spent money on lavish items. She can do that if she wants to. But, she also realised that she over spent and is working her way through life to make everything the way she wants her life to be. That is to be commended as she is clearly a role model for doing that. As for an addition costing a million dollars….please. My husband is in construction and I know what it costs to build. I bet most of the work is done by Joe Guidice himself so the cost is perhaps not that great. Besides, it will add value to the house, nothing wrong with that. When the market booms again, they will recuperate. In the meantime, they are doing whatever it takes to live the lifestyle of their choice. That is their right and we should all commend it rather than be judgmental. Look at the show as a form of learning experience. The economy didn’t crash because of Joe and Teresa, it crashed because ALL OF US, YES YOU AND I included are responsible for it. Growing up, my parents taught me survival skills and I see the same reflected by Teresa. My kids don’t have those survival skills, despite the fact that I tried hard to teach them. It is the times we live in and our environment.
Well i would also like to just put my beak in to say that although I agree that all people should live within their means and consumers did not have to secure home equity to cover depreciating purchases,etc. We should be careful not to be quick to judge individuals as evil or crooks. It might not be true.
Years ago banks did not sponsor credit cards, and unsecured loans and used income vs expense equations (debt ratios) to determine who could afford the money the banks were lending to. I think we have all heard enough about how the banks got bail outs when so many consumers did not.
Millions of Americans did the right thing with their money and were still hurt by the relaxed lending regs, and the reversed legal options available for the money changers to make the riskiest deals imaginable. Much worse than any of the ppl on the show.
So I agree completely that we need to learn from what has occurred and be careful how we handle debt and fixed expenses. And be willing to work for what have and be grateful for what we have and be wise to how things have changed for Americans.
Housewife 99, I am certainly not disputing you, but when you say we, me, had something to do with the crash, I am very, very proud to say, “Not Me.” While my neighbors were buying the latest luxury vehicles, I drove the same 2002 Ford Escape. Not because I was too broke for a BMW, I simply wanted other things out of my life. While my neighbors spent a fortune remodelling their homes because they “really needed the space” even though there was plenty of it, I saved my money. My neighbor said to me one day, after the economy crashed and he lost his job, “You’re Lucky!” I went crazy! I pointed out my car and told him that is what I drove for several years. I pointed at my home and it’s the same size. I went to work and I saved what I could for years. Years, I had not had a vacation, “Like He Did Yearly!” Years I paid cash. My car is used, my boat is used and I never attached anything to my mortgage, like my neighbors did. My neighbors attached cars, furniture, home remodelling, even swimming pools to their mortgage. Not Me. I worked very hard and I avoided using credit cards, with the exception of one. Nowadays, people are forced to use credit cards to establish credit. Everything I buy is on sale. I’m not knocking these women for spending money that is none of my business. What I am saying is, not one of these housewive girly husbands can form a sentence without the “F” word.
By the way, here is my good advice. Never attach anything to your mortgage such as, cars, boats, furniture, swimming pools. Remember this, you are paying interest for 20 to 30 years on those items when they are long out of your lives. You buy new furniture, you’re paying for that old furniture for the life of your mortgage. Also, it’s not worth putting things before shelter. The more you add to your mortgage, the higher your monthly payments, the closer you are on the streets. Never mess with your home. Leave your mortgage alone.

As you’ll note most people post their own opinion, not everyone feels my way yadda, yadda, yadda especially since if you are reading the posts on this site is not even close to the truth. Also, speaking of the economy, the Tre and Joe Bankrupcy included many rental business properties, business deals and house flips that also destroyed thousands of construction companies and small businesses because people thought housing would increase not bottom out. Teresa has stated they sold a lot of their properties now and they owe nowhere near $11 million now and she is working her tush off to pay the rest. She has her faults, but since they are actually paying their debts, sold their properties, are not on welfare and contributing to the economy I don’t think you can put the bad economy at their feet.
Did everyone forget that they actually backed out of their bankruptcy and are paying their debt? So since we should let go of the fact the Mel contacted D becuase it was 2 yrs ago… we should also drop the “bankruptcy” bs becuase it didn’t go through. Thanks!

I had some friends over swimming today. I live in Franklin Lakes, but do not know the Manzo’s (I have seen them in Stop and Shop). My girlfriend brought a friend who knows Teresa well. She said what a nice lady she is. She also said she can’t watch RHONJ because she is so upset how Teresa is portrayed. She said this is NOT who she is. She said she watched Celebrity Apprentice, and said that is how Teresa really is, very sweet.
Anyway, just my little story (sorry, I know it has nothing to do with anything, but I just wanted to share).

Tre is warm and funny from what I can tell and has been brought up from off the boat Italians, which shows in those customs or behaviors that immigrants show. Which is the loyalty to the family, over and above. Love her.

My cousin felt that because Caroline gave her and her kids 2 seconds of time she was a goddess. I was upset. This is what these builders do . They borrow from Peter to pay Paul. They leverage, take the biggest loans on one project to start another project. Then when the economy dies they declare bankruptcy and all the people they owe money to get screwed and in some cases ends up getting passed on to consumers. All while living a rich lifestyle while someone they didn’t pay can’t buy milk for their baby. Then 6 months later they start all over again under a new business name until the next recession.

Nice Italian Girl, thanks for posting this. It needed to be said and you are correct. Most of the stuff said about their finances is speculation. Their circumstances are not well known in their current status, and alot of what is discussed is confused old facts with misrepresentation and outright lies. If anyone has ever been in trouble like this, you know how much hype is created by outsiders for various reasons. I give the Guidices credit for how they have handled this.
As for Stump and his wife, I don’t believe all of this story, but I do know if they have an old outstanding construction loan based on pre crash lending protocols, they are likely over their heads. If they sell and dont file bankruptcy, they can probably get out and do it all over again. I do not consider them honest or all that smart, so sooner or later their spending will catch up with them. Same can be said for Guidices, IF they do not learn or develop other revenue streams,which in their case they have. I bet their legal fees are huge and will also be another obligation to have. I feel badly for Juicy and Tre,and not for Stump and the Crows. Sorry but there is a difference in the way they treat people and deal with their troubles

As well as your good point about the fact that they must have put it all out there since it’s in print – just like they say Teresa must have.

There are 2 homes. The small REDONE house was built in 1942 and it the city of Tom’s River, NJ.

Radar Online keeps misreporting this story. Up thread a few comments explain what the real deal is. They used their shore house and a house they own in Paterson to secure the mortgage for their Montville mansion. So the $2.25 million dollar mortgage is for the Montville home, which is probably worth about that much but the Gorgas are asking $3.8 million. They have the shore home on the market too because if they sale one property, they have to sale them all since they’re tied together. The shore house if for sale for $520,000 but is probably only worth around $400,000 (they paid $450,000 for it in 2005). The Paterson house looks to be in a low-income area and is probably worth less than $100,000. Looks like they owe more than the properties are worth by about $300,000 or more.

Yep. I don’t like the Gorgas but what’s right, is right. The Paterson house has an estimated value between 170K and 199K. Joe bought it in 2007 for 170K, so, that wasn’t a bad investment. Also, they listed the shore house in August of last year — several months after they’d gotten the loan modification, and then, removed the listing. They re-listed for sale abt 4 months ago — prior to putting the Montville house on the market. I wish I could remember the estimated value of the Montville property so don’t quote me…but when I checked a while back, the estimated market value was around 2.2+ million or so.
They just listed the shore house because they thought after the FREE publicity from the Bravo showing their party at the shore house people would be beating down their door to buy it. He could have at least cemented the front walk instead of putting gravel down. Joe Gorga’s workmanship is poor and cheap.
