President Obama Advises Young Audience To Lay Off The ‘Real Housewives!’
Oh snap! Young viewers are half the people who watch the hit franchise and President Obama is advising us that we stop watching things like The ‘Real Housewives.’
The President spoke to the National Urban League Convention in New Orleans yesterday and told the audience, “You’re competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. That means all of you all have got to hit the books. I’m just saying. Don’t cheer and then you didn’t do your homework. Because that’s part of the bargain, that’s part of the bargain — America says we will give you opportunity, but you’ve got to earn your success. You’re competing against young people in Beijing and Bangalore. They’re not hanging out. They’re not getting over. They’re not playing video games. They’re not watching “Real Housewives.” I’m just saying. It’s a two-way street. You’ve got to earn success. That wasn’t in my prepared remarks. But I’m just saying.”

I do agree with him. It’s a generalization and I don’t think he’s picking on the Housewives it’s just what came to mind. His point I think is that there are opportunities out there for the taking but they will not be just handed out because someone wants them – they need to be earned with hard work. He’s trying to encourage folks to focus on what will get you there and not video games or TV. There are definitely high achievers (Rox I think you are

That’s all true, but at the same time he has made deep cuts in education spending. What those kids should have replied to him is that those Asian locales he mentioned are INVESTING in education while we are cutting it.

I do agree. It’s no secret this country has fallen behind in math and science as more people are choosing liberal arts degrees over scientific ones. One of the reasons why our economy is so bad is because our education system is falling behind drastically and we don’t have the man power to fill a lot of the engineering and science jobs. So yes, we should work hard first and play hard later
And stop watching all this trash TV that does nothing productive for society. Everyone wants to live in a masion, drive a Bentley and put out worthless products.

He should concentrate on bring jobs and growth back to America and not preach about frivolous and meaningless subjects. Chinese and Indian students come to the US for secondary education and don’t stay in their own country for a degree, which tells you the US on the point of secondary education and graduate school far out paces the rest of the world.
China has massive surplus due to cheap workforce and limited to no regulations. China is one of the worst countries in R&D as well as patent production, which make the President’s statement non sequitur.
Further on the issue of India, which is not a net exporter I fail to see his logic. India has even fallen out of BRIC growth status recently because of their slower growth projection for 2012 and 2013.
The president’s statements are a cheap shot. Bring back growth and jobs rather than blabber on about TV habits of minors. How about music and movies as well…Internet usage which far exceeds TV viewing on the 13-25 age group? Please!
Education is not simply due your homework, but have a goal. However, if this country has limited opportunities children will lack motivation.
The global rating exam for HS students is known as PISA. It is true that china out ranked US in all areas. However, it is also true that China only used a fine subsection of their populace as a testing group, which makes the results completely skewed. Moreover, India didn’t even place in the top 23 which is where Bangalore is located.
Take everything with a grain of salt. Obama is solely looking for sound bites and he grappled on one with reality TV. He failed to look at demographics of the audience because Jersey Shore would have been more appropriate, but it is Obama king of the teleprompter.

For Jennifer: I live in a city on So Cal that is more Chinese and people from India than anything else. This is a fact that the Chinese moms come her with the kids, husbands stay in China get the kids thru high school then to the University of Cal. system and then the moms leave and go back to China. I worked with a woman who did this. It makes it very difficult for myself and other people of live in and pay taxes in Cal. to get our kids in to the UC system. We are giving our son every advantage; he is doing the Princeton Review SAT class this summer and has 3 AP summer assignments to complete. California is extremely competitive thanks to the foreigners.
DUDE – jobs come from companies and businesses, not the gov’t. Even if they were to levy all the taxes on businesses to get more jobs it won’t help a damn bit because companies are not out to help the people of the u.s. they are out for profit. And that profit comes from other countries that don’t require minimum wage, human rights, etc.

I empathize with you. I am in the area in NYC and NJ with the largest number of students who attend Ivy league schools. I know of the drive immigrants place on their children, which is wonderful. It is the true American dream, but that is not what Obama stated, since the people in the US are not the subject matter of his speech.
He said we are to competitive with children who are in China and children who are in India, which is patently false. PISA is the test used cross boarder. India is not even on the list in the top 23 which the US appears and China has been cited by ETS and others for false cross sectioning.

That is not my premise of increasing taxes. In fact it would be the direct opposite. The President job is to create policy to maintain and make the economy flourish, which he has done neither.
Increased taxes on businesses would definitely have a negative effect. I agree with you. Decrease in taxes for corporation, maintenance of the Bush tax cuts, elimination of death tax, curbing spending, and total revamping of Obama Care would be ways to jump start growth.
All Presidents are charged with jump starting growth. He has had unemployment at untenable levels for the duration of his presidency. He has increased regulation on lending money even though rates are lower then hey have ever been since commercial mortgages came into existence. Obama has been a death knell towards growth and job creation the the private sector.

Why do they know more about reality tv and video games than their school work and that is the truth! I don’t think he was specifically targeting The Real Housewives (I think his wife is said to indulge and watch from time to time) but he means spending time NOT educating themselves with things that matter. As an educator I know what kids are talking about and it’s not their school work..if they didn’t have it to watch they’d be forced to do something else. Let’s give young children something WORTH watching…what ever happened to truly educational shows and not so any and everything on the show can be marketed! sigh!

It seems to me that Kathy expected to show face on a few episodes and then magically have her book in production the next week. Similar to the Marco Sisters, who considered themselves ‘Public Figures’ on their Facebook page before RHNJ’s first episode of season 3 aired. Their faces should be next to the term “delusions of entitlement.”

Um, Obama has played 104 rounds of golf since elected, 16 vacations, Martha’s Vinyard, Hawaii, Vail… and 110 fundraisers since April 2011, which is working for his election and not the country and is more fundraisers than the last six presidents combined did. I think having enough free time and hours for fancy dinner fundraisers is not his problem.

Well Bionic to answer your question the first one who comes to mind that has a college education and degree is Teresa. Another is Phaedra and from what I am hearing a lot of the Miami housewives have degrees. Sure there are quite a few that just “spread their legs and marry so called “rich” men” but a lot do have ccllege educations.
Ok. I forgot Phaedra is probably the only one with a real profession obtained by academics. Adrienne sits on few boards of her companies which I doubt came by her hard studies. Tre, love her to pieces but I highly doubt that her wealth is the product of her “career”.
The “REALITY” of these shows is that they are teaching this generation BULLSHYTE. That simple!
What % of the country lives in this over-the-top luxurious lifestyle? What percentage does brunches & galas day in and out and walk around with $25,000 sunglasses? This is what all these media networks are projecting onto society. I don’t see one show that actually is pushing the agenda of education and REAL family values. Where are the shows showing parents struggle with disable children or families of fallen soldiers? People with REAL life issues and not all the stupid bickering that these shows expose. Sad part is that the few shows that actually showed this, were canceled due to low audience because we are too consumed with trash media to care.

They lose their homes and luxurious possessions. The politicians are doing this on a scale that will wipe out an entire country’s economy.

The reason Bangalore and China are growing more successful is that’s where OUR jobs are outsourced to.

If those jobs were kept here as opportunities, young people would have more to aspire to.
Bangalore is In India. It is also the largest area for out sourcing engineers for software companies. However, they are to the best and used as mass surplus for engineering. But, India does not rank in top 23 in testing for math and science for their youth under PISA the only cross boarder exam given.
Where is there a “cross boarder exam” given in the US though? Every State requisite examination is different. Each state creates their own. In reality the Board of Education is not a nationwide system in the US.

Kids of this generation ‘should’ be studying; going to school; motivated; ambitious; have future business goals set for themselves & the list is endless but bottom line get of the couch & off the streets & make it happen ……..:)

I agree. The Real Housewives franchise has become pretty trashy and negative. I used to watch all of them and now I’m down to two because I can’t stand all the catty, negative, trashiness of the shoes. The Real Housewives is not “reality” which is what makes it so funny when we all act like we know them!
