Kate Casey, the host of Reality Life with Kate Casey podcast, sat down at a Hollywood bar to interview Tom Sandoval of Vanderpump Rules. In addition to discussing his acting and modeling past, the Saint Louis native disclosed how meeting cast mate Jax Taylor led him to the Vanderpump Rules family and how he never expected the show to be as big as it is. “I was trying to be a series regular on a show and I hadn’t really watched a lot of reality TV,” he conceded, “I didn’t want it to ruin my career before it took off. I was around the last person to sign the contract.”
He described the juggling act of managing acting and modeling gigs (pre-Vanderpump Rules) as a “constant hustle,” adding “I was changing clothes while driving a stick shift on the 405.” Since then, Sandoval explained, the Bravo show has opened more doors than it has closed, “but in other ways, you no longer have that anonymity.”
The Vanderpump veteran also spoke about welcoming new cast members to the group. “Whenever they’re trying to bring someone new in, I am always very suspicious. I’ve never been crazy rude, but we are protective. We do reveal a lot and we dive into our personal stuff. In the earlier seasons, people were very quick to comment on my personal life. There was a girl named Dani on Season 2 who was talking about something going on with me and Ariana. Don’t be coming in here doing that unless you’re willing to reveal skeletons in your closet!”
On the subject of wannabe cast members, Casey brought up Faith Stowers who had a brief affair with Jax Taylor, who is in a long-term committed relationship with Brittany Cartwright. Sandoval revealed he was always skeptical of Stowers’ motivations since she had previously expressed romantic interests in several cast members (including a crush on coworker/castmate Lala Kent). According to Sandoval, Stowers had actually requested that someone walk in on her and Jax while they were engaged in their illicit activities. This made Stowers’ motivations even more suspect. In addition, Sandoval explained, the recording that Stowers captured of a post-coital conversation between her and Taylor sounded like an interview and a deliberate effort at making a storyline.
When the host brought up how Sandoval seems to be a great boyfriend to Ariana Madix, who struggles with body insecurities resulting from an abusive past relationship, Sandoval replied “I love Ariana so so much. I’ve never been in love the way that I am with Ariana…I feel like we’ve always been a good support system with each other. In a lot of relationships, there’s a resentment that builds up…I know she had issues in the past. I understand and I want to help in any way I can. The better she feels about herself, the better she can be outwardly.”
